Sideshows or Freak Shows have been around in North America since the 1800's.

A sideshow is an exhibition of rarities, or freaks of nature, for instance the bearded lady or a person with male and female sexual characteristics. Performances were often meant to be shocking to the viewers. Heavily tattooed people have historically been a part of the sideshow.
