Lip Sewing is a ritual activity, either done for aesthetic reasons, or to help focus the mind for meditation by removing the ability to speak.

Generally sutures are used, though sometimes needle blades or cannulas are used and monofilament threaded between the piercings. The sutures are normally left in from a few minutes to several hours. Care needs to be taken to not tie them too tightly, as there is usually a fair amount of swelling. Once removed the holes heal quickly and scarring is very unusual.
