Warfarin Sodium is also known by the brand names Coumadin and Marevin.
Warfarin is used to prevent blood clots from forming or growing larger. It is often used as a follow up treatment following diagnosis of a DVT (deep venous thrombosis—a blood clot), which usually requires a short hospitalization. Warfarin is also commonly prescribed for patients with certain types of irregular heartbeat, after some heart attacks, as well as following heart valve replacement surgery.
Warfarin works by inhibiting vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors (stops blood clot formation).
Warfarin was originally developed as a rat poison.
