Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by the inability of the body to regulate blood sugar levels caused by a lack of the hormone insulin, resistance to insulin, or both.

Diabetes often contributes to frequent and/or recurring infections and may also increase the time required to heal cuts, bruises or other wounds. For this reason, diabetics should consult a doctor before being pierced or tattooed, as the condition can greatly reduces the ability of the body to heal wounds properly.
