In extremely rare cases excess scarring from female genital piercing (hood piercing) can cause the clitoris to be hidden or occluded. A reader writes,

When I removed my clitoral hood piercing (medium gauge — it was done in 1997 and I can't remember exactly), scar tissue caused my clitoris to retreat beneath the hood. I now have almost no sensation at all. I would advise anyone thinking of getting one not to do it — the risk is simply too great.
