Chain piercing is a subtype of permanent piercing. If a piercing is done using chain, rather than a solid bar or ring, the skin inside the piercing grows through the holes in the chain. This seals the chain in place, making it effectively impossible to remove without a great deal of effort (although due to pinching between links, the piercing will probably never be entirely "truly healed" in such a technique).
If problems arise, be they infection, metal allergy, or any number of other things, they become dramatically more serious since the piercing can not be removed without surgical excision.
