Michelle Black is the first Scottish piercer to be criminally convicted. In September of 1999 Michelle Black, a beauty salon owner, who was also running piercing booths at a dance music festival, was arrested for multiple health code violations. In October of 2001 she was convicted for, amongst other things, having inadequate sterilization procedures, failing to conduct her business in a safe manner due to the effects of alcohol consumption, and failing to comprehend the substances she was using.

Described by the prosecuting judge as "not only incompetent, but a thoroughly dishonest person", she was fined £1,500 in total for the four crimes under the Health and Safety at Work act of which she was convicted.
