Often referred to as permanent makeup or cosmetic tattooing (along with Eyelid Tattooing), the lips may be tattooed as desired.

Lip tattooing requires that the tattoo artist take special care (and often has specific training) in order to work the area thoroughly but also gently in order to achieve solid color. Multiple sessions are not uncommon. However, unlike eyelid tattooing, special inks are not required.

As with other cosmetic tattooing, lip tattooing is sometimes offered by cosmeticians using a cosmetic pen or similar device which is actually just a poorly made tattoo machine. The operator often has far less training and understanding of it than a normally apprenticed tattoo artist.
