The raphé (pronounced 'raff-ay') is the mid-line of the penis extending from the frenum on the underside of the glans down the underside of the penis shaft and the mid-line of the scrotum to the perenium, the area between the scrotum and the anus. The raphé is often darker than adjoining skin, and slightly raised. It marks the line that concludes the fetal development of the male genitals and their differentiation from female genitals. It is also useful in securing the correct alignment of shaft skin following circumcision, or the alignment of a subincision.
