A nerve block is established when an injectable anesthetic, such as lidocaine and/or Marcaine, is injected directly into a bundle of nerves prior to "branching out" into a given area. For example, a ulnar nerve block may be utilized (at the elbow) to entirely anesthetize the entire lower portion of the arm.
