Because BME is community generated, Shannon Larratt believes that it would be ethically inappropriate to spend money on advertising (ie. making some other company rich), and instead any money that would be spent on promotion is instead used to sponsor site members to both help achieve their goals and to raise awareness of the site in new areas (or sometimes just help an event happen).
