Steroids (Anabolic-Androgenic)

Steroids (also gluco-corticoids) are man-made substances related to the male sex hormone testorone. The term "Anabolic" refers to the muscle building aspect of the drug and "Androgenic" refers to increased male characteristics.

Steroids are only legally provided by prescription, to treat certain health disorders such as certain types of impotence occurring in men, delayed puberty, female to male transsexuality and certain diseases that may cause body wasting and loss of muscle mass such as AIDS.

Today athletes and other individuals abuse steroids to enhance their looks and strength either through injections or through oral dosages.

Health risks:

Some health risks that are included but not limited to from abusing steroids are:

  • Liver tumors and cancer
  • Jaundice
  • Fluid retention
  • Severe acne
  • Trembling
  • Kidney tumors

Health risks in men

  • Shrinking of the testicles
  • Reduced sperm count
  • Infertility
  • Baldness
  • Development of breasts
  • Increased risk of prostate cancer

Health risks in women

  • Growth of facial hair
  • Male-pattern baldness
  • Changes of the menstrual cycle
  • Clitoris enlargement
  • Deepened voice
