Jay Crockett began his career as a tattoo artist old school style- through a tough apprenticeship under Frank Romano (now of DaVinci Tattoo) and his father, Larry Romano, at Peter Tat-2 on Long Island, NY. This was back in 1989 when there wasn’t a tattoo shop on every corner. You wanted an apprenticeship and you had to prove yourself by drawing, drawing, drawing, taking breaks only to scrub tubes, wash windows, mop the floor, answer the phone, and set up and break down the tattooists’ stations. You lived, breathed, ate, drank and slept tattoos.
Once his apprenticeship was completed, Jay worked at Peter Tat-2 in West Hempstead, NY, until Larry opened the shop in Danbury, CT. Jay was home. But not for long. He decided to go back to school to finish his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration at Paier College of Art, in Hamden, CT.
Although he was painting plenty, there was no keeping him from tattooing- before he graduated (cum laude) he was working at Tattoo International in Wallingford, CT. After a few years there, he put in time at The Edge Tattoo’s New Haven location, Green Man Tattoo in West Hartford, and then Lucky Soul Tattoo in Ansonia, CT.
Finally, after a brief stint at Billy Eason’s Capital Tattoo in Richmond, VA, Jay went back home to Peter Tat-2 in Danbury.
He now makes his home at Brass City Tattoo located at: 2 Congress Ave. Waterbury CT. 06708.
