Herpes is a common viral infection in many forms, causing blister-like formations or sores on the skin or mucous membranes. It can be transmitted via skin to skin contact, even to unaffected body parts on an infected person. Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV-1) denotes above-the-waist infection, whereas Herpes Simplex Type 2 (HSV-2) refers to below-the-waist forms. Cold sores and genital herpes are common forms. Use of condoms or disposable gloves helps reduce the risk of spreading herpes.
